The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a common bird found in urban and suburban areas worldwide. While they can be a nuisance due to their aggressive behavior and ability to spread disease, they are also protected by law in some areas. If you're looking for a humane way to control the house sparrow population in your area, consider building a repeating house sparrow trap. Repeating house sparrow traps are designed to capture multiple birds at once, making them a more efficient option than traditional traps. They are also relatively easy to build and can be made from materials that are readily available at most hardware stores. ## Things You'll Need: - 1/2-inch plywood (4 feet x 8 feet) - 2-inch x 4-inch lumber (8 feet) - 1-inch x 2-inch lumber (8 feet) - 1-inch x 4-inch lumber (8 feet) - 1/2-inch hardware cloth (4 feet x 8 feet) - 1/4-inch plywood (2 feet x 2 feet) - 1/2-inch PVC pipe (10 feet) - 90-degree PVC elbow - PVC end cap - Wood screws - Nails - Hammer - Saw - Drill - Tape measure - Level ## Step-by-Step Guide: 1.
Cut the plywood:
- Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood to 4 feet x 8 feet. - Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood to 2 feet x 4 feet. - Cut one piece of 1/4-inch plywood to 2 feet x 2 feet. 2.Build the frame:
- Attach the two 4-foot x 8-foot pieces of plywood to the 2-inch x 4-inch lumber using wood screws. - Attach the two 2-foot x 4-foot pieces of plywood to the 2-inch x 4-inch lumber using wood screws. - Attach the 1-inch x 2-inch lumber to the inside of the frame using nails. 3.Attach the hardware cloth:
- Attach the 1/2-inch hardware cloth to the inside of the frame using nails. - Be sure to stretch the hardware cloth tightly so that there are no gaps. 4.Build the funnel:
- Cut a 12-inch circle out of the 1/4-inch plywood. - Attach the 12-inch circle to the center of the 2-foot x 2-foot piece of plywood using wood screws. - Cut a 6-inch diameter hole in the center of the 12-inch circle. 5.Attach the funnel to the trap:
- Attach the 2-foot x 2-foot piece of plywood to the inside of the trap, centered between the two 4-foot x 8-foot pieces of plywood. - Make sure that the 6-inch diameter hole is aligned with the opening of the trap. 6.Build the bait tray:
- Cut a 12-inch square out of the 1/4-inch plywood. - Attach the 12-inch square to the bottom of the trap, centered between the two 2-foot x 4-foot pieces of plywood. 7.Attach the PVC pipe:
- Attach the 90-degree PVC elbow to the end of the 10-foot piece of PVC pipe. - Attach the PVC end cap to the other end of the PVC pipe. - Insert the PVC pipe into the 6-inch diameter hole in the funnel. 8.Test the trap:
- Place some birdseed or other bait in the bait tray. - Set the trap in an area where house sparrows are known to frequent. - Check the trap regularly and release any non-target animals that may have been caught.Deluxe Humane Repeating Sparrow Trap
