Mourning Dove Birdhouse Plans: A Comprehensive Guide to Shelter Design

Mourning doves are beloved birds known for their gentle cooing and graceful flight. Providing them with a cozy nesting space is a thoughtful gesture that supports their well-being and encourages their presence in your outdoor space. Building a mourning dove birdhouse is a rewarding project that can enhance your birdwatching experience.

Site Selection and Materials

Choose a sheltered location with ample sunlight and protection from prevailing winds. The birdhouse should be placed at a height of 6-10 feet above the ground, on a tree, post, or bracket. Ensure easy access for cleaning and maintenance.

Use durable materials such as cedar or redwood, which are naturally resistant to rot and insects. Alternatively, treated pine or recycled lumber can be suitable options. Avoid using plywood or particleboard, as they absorb moisture and deteriorate over time.

Dimensions and Shape

Mourning doves prefer nesting boxes that are approximately 6 inches wide, 6 inches long, and 8 inches deep. The entrance hole should be 1 3/8 inches in diameter, located 3-4 inches below the roof. A slightly slanted roof provides optimal drainage and prevents water from accumulating inside.

Consider providing a small perch or landing platform just below the entrance hole, making it easier for the birds to enter and exit. An elevated bottom, slightly raised above the floor, helps keep eggs and chicks dry in case of moisture.

Ventilation and Drainage

Proper ventilation is crucial to prevent mold and mildew buildup. Include small ventilation holes, approximately 1/4 inch in diameter, near the top of the side walls. These holes allow fresh air to circulate while preventing drafts and moisture from entering.

Ensure that the roofline overhangs the entry hole to prevent rainwater from dripping into the nesting area. A drainage hole in the floor can also be useful for removing excess moisture. Cover the hole with a small piece of mesh to prevent debris from entering.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning is essential to maintain a healthy environment for mourning doves. Remove old nesting materials, droppings, and any debris that may accumulate inside the birdhouse. Use a mild disinfectant to clean the interior surfaces, and rinse thoroughly with water before allowing it to dry completely.

Check the birdhouse periodically for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Make necessary repairs or replacements to ensure the structure remains safe and habitable for its occupants. By following these guidelines, you can provide mourning doves with a comfortable and welcoming nesting space where they can thrive and raise their young.
