1. Location and Orientation

Choose a sunny spot in your garden, away from disturbances like foot traffic or pets. The entrance hole should face southeast for optimal sun exposure. Orient the house at a slight angle to prevent rain from entering.

2. Size and Dimensions

Bumble bees prefer houses with multiple chambers, each approximately 4 inches wide and 6 inches deep. A typical house should be at least 8 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Leave ample space between chambers for air circulation.

3. Materials and Construction

Use untreated, rot-resistant wood, such as cedar or redwood. Avoid using pressure-treated lumber, as it contains chemicals that can be harmful to bees. Line the chambers with natural materials like dry grass, leaves, or moss to provide insulation.

4. Entrance Hole

Provide a 1-inch diameter entrance hole at the base of the house. This allows bumble bees to easily enter and leave the nest. Smoothen the edges of the hole to prevent injury to the bees.

5. Roof and Drainage

Cover the house with a weatherproof roof, such as a piece of asphalt shingle or tin. Ensure the roof extends beyond the sides of the house to create an overhang and protect from rain. Provide small drainage holes at the bottom of the house to prevent water accumulation.

6. Protection from Predators

Place the house on a platform or pole at least 2 feet off the ground to protect bees from predators like mice or skunks. Consider adding a wire mesh barrier around the entrance hole to prevent larger animals from entering.

7. Maintenance and Monitoring

Inspect the house regularly for signs of damage or debris. Clean out the chambers as needed and replace any soiled lining materials. Avoid disturbing the bees during nesting season, as this can cause them to abandon the house.
