Haunted House Writing Lesson Plan Objectives:

  • Students will be able to write a descriptive story about a haunted house.
  • Students will be able to use their senses to create a vivid and engaging story.
  • Students will be able to use figurative language to create a mood and atmosphere.
Materials:
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Halloween candy (optional)
  • Computer with Internet access (optional)
Procedure:
  1. Introduction:

Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever been to a haunted house. If so, have them share their experiences. If not, explain that a haunted house is a place that is believed to be inhabited by ghosts or other supernatural beings.

  2. Brainstorming:

Next, ask students to brainstorm a list of things that they might see, hear, or feel in a haunted house. Some examples might include:

    • Dark hallways
    • Creaky floors
    • Spiderwebs
    • Dust
    • Moaning sounds
    • Strange smells
    • Cold spots
    • Haunted furniture

  3. Setting the Scene:

Once students have generated a list of ideas, ask them to choose one or two elements to focus on for their story. Then, have them write a paragraph describing the setting of their story, incorporating their chosen elements.

  4. Developing the Story:

Next, ask students to develop the story of their haunted house. What happens when the main character enters the house? What do they see, hear, or feel? Do they encounter any ghosts or other supernatural beings? How do they react to the events that unfold?

  5. Ending the Story:

Finally, ask students to write a conclusion to their story. How does the main character escape from the haunted house? Do they learn anything from their experience? What is the message of the story?

  6. Sharing:

When students have finished writing their stories, ask them to share them with the class. If you have access to computers, you can have students type their stories and share them electronically.

Assessment:
  • Students will be assessed on their ability to:
    • Write a descriptive story about a haunted house.
    • Use their senses to create a vivid and engaging story.
    • Use figurative language to create a mood and atmosphere.
