Origins and Early Reign

The Plantagenets trace their lineage back to Geoffrey V of Anjou, who married Empress Matilda, the only surviving child of King Henry I of England. Their son, Henry II, became the first Plantagenet king in 1154. Henry II was a strong and effective ruler who established a centralized monarchy and expanded English control over Wales and Ireland.

The Angevin Empire

Under Henry II and his successors, the Plantagenets established an empire that stretched from England across northern France.
