The Fall of House Usher Lesson Plan

Materials:
- Copies of The Fall of House Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Markers
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes)
- Reading the Story (25 minutes)
- Character and Setting Analysis (10 minutes)
- Symbolism Analysis (10 minutes)
- Interpretation of the Story (10 minutes)
Begin by introducing Edgar Allan Poe and his famous short story, The Fall of House Usher. Provide some background information on Poe's life and writing style.
Divide students into small groups and distribute copies of the story. Have them read the story aloud in their groups, taking turns reading paragraphs.
After reading the story, lead a discussion on the main characters and setting. Ask students to identify the major characters and describe their relationships to each other.
Discuss the setting of the story and its significance. How does the setting contribute to the atmosphere and tone of the story?
Poe uses a great deal of symbolism in his stories. Ask students to identify some of the key symbols in The Fall of House Usher and discuss their meanings.
For example, the crumbling mansion could symbolize the decay of the Usher family.
Finally, ask students to share their interpretations of the story. What do they think is the meaning of the story? What is Poe trying to say about the human condition?
Encourage students to support their interpretations with evidence from the text.
