Plans for Cat House: Building a Cozy Abode for Your Feline Friend

Cats are independent creatures, but they also crave comfort and security. Providing them with a dedicated space where they can retreat and feel safe can make a big difference in their overall well-being. A cat house is a great way to do just that, and with a little planning and effort, you can build one yourself.

What You'll Need

  • 1 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 1 sheet of 1/2-inch plywood (4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • 1-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)
  • Carpet or fabric for lining the interior (optional)

Steps

1
Cut the Wood

Start by cutting the plywood into the following pieces:

  • 2 pieces 24 inches by 36 inches (sides)
  • 2 pieces 16 inches by 36 inches (front and back)
  • 1 piece 16 inches by 24 inches (top)
  • 1 piece 16 inches by 16 inches (bottom)

You can use a saw to cut the wood, or you can have it cut at a home improvement store.

2
Assemble the Sides

Take the two 24-inch by 36-inch pieces of plywood and place them side by side, with the long edges aligned. Apply a bead of wood glue to the top edge of one piece, and then press the other piece on top, making sure the edges are flush.

Secure the pieces together with 2-inch wood screws, driving them through the top piece and into the bottom piece. Repeat this process to assemble the other side of the cat house.

3
Attach the Front and Back

Take one of the 16-inch by 36-inch pieces of plywood and place it between the two assembled sides, flush with the top and bottom edges. Apply a bead of wood glue to the edges of the front piece, and then press it against the sides.

Secure the front piece with 1-inch wood screws, driving them through the front piece and into the sides. Repeat this process to attach the back piece.

4
Add the Top and Bottom

Take the 16-inch by 24-inch piece of plywood and place it on top of the cat house, flush with the front and back edges. Apply a bead of wood glue to the edges of the top piece, and then press it into place.

Secure the top piece with 1-inch wood screws, driving them through the top piece and into the sides. Repeat this process to attach the bottom piece.

5
Sand and Finish

Once the cat house is assembled, sand the edges of the wood to smooth them out. You can then paint or stain the cat house to match your décor. If you want to add a little extra comfort, you can line the interior of the house with carpet or fabric.

Enjoy Your New Cat House!

Your cat will love having a cozy place to call their own. Whether they're taking a nap, hiding from strangers, or just enjoying a quiet moment alone, your cat house will be their go-to spot.
