Purple Finch Bird House Plans: A Step-by-Step Guide

Purple Finches are charming and vibrant songbirds that add a touch of color to any backyard. Here are step-by-step plans to help you create the perfect purple finch home:

Materials:

* 1" x 6" cedar or redwood boards (two 6-foot boards) * 1/2" plywood (12" x 18") * 1-1/4" exterior screws * Wood glue * Drill * Countersink bit * Saw * Measuring tape * Pencil

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut the Front and Back Panels

* Cut two pieces of 1" x 6" board to 6" x 6". These will form the front and back panels.

Step 2: Cut the Side Panels

* Cut two pieces of 1" x 6" board to 6" x 12". These will form the side panels.

Step 3: Cut the Base

* Cut a piece of 1/2" plywood to 6" x 6". This will form the base of the birdhouse.

Step 4: Assemble the Box

* Apply wood glue to the edges of the side panels. * Place the side panels vertically against the inside of the front and back panels, aligning the edges. * Secure the panels with 1-1/4" screws, countersinking the heads. * Repeat the process for the base, attaching it to the bottom of the box.

Step 5: Create the Roof

* Cut two pieces of 1" x 6" board to 6" x 12". These will form the two halves of the roof. * Join the roof pieces together at a 45-degree angle, overlapping them 4"-6". Secure with 1-1/4" screws.

Step 6: Attach the Roof

* Apply wood glue to the top of the birdhouse box. * Place the roof on top and align the edges. Secure with 1-1/4" screws, countersinking the heads.

Step 7: Drill the Entrance Hole

* On the front panel, 3" from the top, drill a 1-1/8" entrance hole.

Step 8: Add Finishing Touches

* Sand any rough edges or splinters. * Apply a coat of exterior paint or stain to protect the birdhouse.

Additional Tips:

* Add a perch below the entrance hole for the birds to land on. * Mount the birdhouse 6'-12' high on a tree or post, facing east or southeast. * Clean the birdhouse regularly to prevent disease and parasites.
