Building a wire quail cage is an excellent way to house your birds while giving them enough space to thrive. When planning and constructing your cage, consider these essential aspects:

1. Size and Dimensions

The cage's size will depend on the number of quails you intend to keep. Generally, provide 1 cubic foot of space per bird. The cage should be tall enough for the quails to stand upright and long enough for them to move around freely.

2. Wire Gauge and Spacing

Choose wire with a gauge of 14-16 for the cage frame. For the sides and top, use a wire with a gauge of 16-18. The spacing between the wires should be narrow enough to prevent the quails from escaping, typically around 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

3. Materials

Use galvanized or coated wire to prevent rust and corrosion. Stainless steel wire is ideal but more expensive. The frame can be made of wood, metal, or PVC pipe.

4. Floor Design

Provide a wire floor to allow droppings to pass through, keeping the cage clean. Use a wire mesh size of 1/2 to 1-inch to prevent the quails from getting their feet caught. Place a tray underneath the cage to collect droppings.

5. Food and Water

Attach feeders and waterers to the cage walls or suspend them from the ceiling. Ensure the quails can access food and water easily.

6. Ventilation

Provide adequate ventilation to prevent ammonia buildup. Install vents or open areas on multiple sides of the cage to allow for air circulation.

7. Perches

Quails enjoy perching. Include a few perches made of natural materials like wood or bamboo within the cage.

8. Nesting Box

If you plan to breed quails, include nesting boxes within the cage. The boxes should be dark and private, such as cardboard boxes or plastic containers lined with nesting materials.

9. Lighting

Quails need natural light for their well-being. Place the cage in an area where it receives indirect sunlight or provide artificial lighting using a timer.

10. Safety

Ensure the cage is secure to prevent predators from accessing the quails. Cover the top and sides of the cage with netting or other materials to protect the birds from flying out.
